Demonstration of Energy Efficient Developments (DEED) Program

The American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments program, known as DEED, funds research, pilot projects, and education to improve the operations and services of public power utilities. All AMP Member communities have access to APPA programs, including the DEED program, through their membership in AMP.

DEED encourages activities that support cutting-edge utility projects and demonstrations; provide scholarships for utility internships; share research findings and best practices; and offer resources to enhance public power research and development.

Funding is available to improve utilities by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, investigating new technologies, offering new services, and improving processes and practices to better serve customers. DEED grants have been used to improve reliability, safety, security and lessen environmental impact. The grants are typically $25,000-$50,000 but could be up to $125,000. Applications are due February 15 and August 15 each year.

In addition, DEED offers three types of scholarships to introduce students to career opportunities in public power — lineworker scholarships, student internships and technical education scholarships. To apply, students must be studying energy-related disciplines and must be accepted or enrolled in accredited lineworker programs, vocational schools, colleges or universities. Students require a DEED member utility to serve as a sponsor and mentor for their scholarship. AMP Members or a student may initiate the scholarship application process. Applications are due February 15 and October 15 each year.

DEED members have direct access to the DEED Project Database, a repository for all information on DEED projects since the program’s inception. DEED members may search the database to find and print final reports and summaries of DEED funded projects. DEED members also have the opportunity to purchase APPA publications and attend APPA webinars at a discounted rate.
