Healthcare Innovation Powered by Partnership
Founded in 1915 as the Cummings Machine Company, Midmark Corporation has undergone significant change and growth since its early days. Originally operating as a manufacturer of concrete mixers, Midmark has since grown into a global titan in the manufacturing of equipment for medical, dental and veterinary spaces. In fact, if the average American visits a physician, there is a 90 percent chance that the table or cabinetry in the room was manufactured by Midmark.
For some, seeing a company of this size operating out of a small community like the Village of Versailles might seem odd. But for Midmark, the world-class partnership they have developed with the village and its public power utility has been a key contributor to their success.
“The relationship between Midmark and the Village of Versailles has been absolutely exceptional,” said Rob Sackett, Chief Operations Officer for Midmark. “It is critical for our growth, especially when you think about how we have grown just recently. In 2021, we added over 114,000 square feet of manufacturing space and a new Technology and Experience Center here in Versailles. That doesn’t happen unless we are planful and thoughtful with the Village of Versailles and Village of Versailles Utilities.”
Midmark first moved its operations to Versailles in 1969 and, since then, the village’s electric utility has worked to help the company grow and prosper. The utility has undertaken numerous projects to improve service at Midmark facilities, including installation of a new substation and automatic reclosers.
In 2017, when Midmark began to consider expanding its Versailles facilities, the Village of Versailles Utilities quickly got to work on facing challenges presented by the expansion.
“My first thought was, ‘Hey, we have a large, dedicated power circuit for Midmark that runs right through the middle of this expansion project,’” said Kyle Francis, Versailles Village Administrator. “So, we began instantly working on how to reroute that infrastructure while still providing the same redundant, reliable service to Midmark.”
In the end, the Village of Versailles Utilities invested an estimated $170,000 in rebuilding the electric circuit and relocating water mains in the area, as well as expanding local streets, to ensure the project could be completed. As a result of this work, Midmark was able to complete its expansion in 2021 without any major disruptions to utility services — an impressive feat that wasn’t lost on Midmark leadership.
With the opening of its new Experience and Technology Center, Midmark can now provide a hands-on space for collaboration with clients. Practitioners can view Midmark products in realistic spaces and select the products and customizations that work best for their businesses. In 2024 alone, the Experience and Technology Center welcomed visitors from 232 different client companies.
“I have manufactured around the world — in the United States, Mexico, China, India — multitudes of places,” said Sackett. “What we do here [the partnership between the company and utility] is exceptional, and I would say it rivals with relationships that I have had anywhere in the best places to work around the world.”
