COLUMBUS, OH: American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) is pleased to announce that Kimberly Schlichting, President and CEO of the Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation (DEMEC) and a member of the AMP Board of Trustees, was named the Harold Kramer-John Preston Personal Service Award recipient during the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) National Conference, which took place June 6-11 in New Orleans.

The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions toward the APPA’s goals and enhanced its prestige.

Schlichting has been active with APPA and has worked to advance the goals of the organization and public power since she joined DEMEC in 2003. She served as a member of the APPA Board of Directors from 2016-2022 and Executive Committee from 2020-2022, as well as the Nominating Committee, Strategic Committee, and others.

Schlichting’s passion for service and supporting public power shines through in her role as APPA’s Delaware Regional Network Coordinator, organizing responding crews after extreme weather events. Notably, in 2019, she was an early passionate advocate of the Light Up Navajo (LUN) Pilot Program — an initiative of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, in coordination with APPA, to help bring electricity to families in need in the Navajo Nation. Since then, she has remained extremely active with the project, and she has personally traveled to the Navajo Nation in support of LUN, bringing with her volunteer crews from DEMEC member communities. Kimberly regularly attends APPA’s National Conference and Legislative Rally. In 2019, she received APPA’s Mark Crisson Leadership and Managerial Excellence Award.

“Kimberly is highly regarded as a leader on the AMP Board and in the industry,” said Jolene Thompson, AMP President/CEO. “In addition to her passionate support of the LUN effort, she has helped to advance the goals of APPA through her service on the APPA Board of Directors and on several Board committees, including the Executive Committee. This recognition is well deserved and goes hand in hand with the Crisson Award she received in 2019 as a testament to her leadership and contributions toward public power.”

Prior to becoming President and CEO of DEMEC, Schlichting served the organization as COO and Senior Vice President of Power Supply, providing pivotal leadership in growing DEMEC’s staff from three to 18 full-time employees. Before DEMEC, she served as the Assistant Town Manager for the Town of Smyrna, Delaware.

Schlichting holds a Bachelor of Technology in architectural engineering design and a Master of Business Administration from Delaware State University.

APPA is the service organization for the nation’s more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities that serve more than 49 million Americans.
