Columbus, OH: American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) is pleased to announce that its Power Plant Operator Training Program has been approved as a Registered Sponsor by ApprenticeOhio.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Office of Apprenticeship recognizes ApprenticeOhio as a Registered Apprenticeship program serving to advise, consult and register programs that meet specific criteria for quality and safety, resulting in nationally portable credentials.

“After receiving approval in 2023 for DOL certification of our Lineworker Apprenticeship Training Program, AMP began to work on a similar program for power plant operators who work in public power systems,” said Michelle L. Palmer, PE, AMP Vice President of Technical Services and Compliance. “Thank you to representatives in the AMP Member community of Marshall, Mich., who worked with us to develop a program that would work well for power plant operators in public power communities that own and maintain their own generation. We are pleased to add this layer of training to our services for Members.”

This approval will allow AMP Members, regardless of state, to register their power plant operators for certification through AMP’s registered training program, with AMP serving as the group sponsor. A registered power plant operator training program combines on-the-job training and related instruction under the program standards as approved by the DOL and the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council.

Power plant operators who complete all steps of the training program will be eligible to receive certification from the DOL. Steps include:

  • Performing 7,200 hours of on-the-job training.
  • Completing the Power Plant Operations Academy courses, presented by Kansas Municipal Utilities;
  • Completing the Northwest Lineman College’s Substation Technician Certification program; and
