AMP Recognizes Employee Innovation with Annual Award

Published on: 08/01/2022

COLUMBUS, OH: American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) has named Tony Phan the honoree of the 2022 AMP Employee Innovator Award. Phan is the senior systems administrator of SCADA and has been with the organization since 2005.

The AMP Employee Innovator Award launched in 2021 to promote and support “a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the organization.” Given annually, the award recognizes an employee or team of employees for demonstrating innovation through creative thinking, solutions, or programs and/or cost-cutting mechanisms that benefit AMP and/or AMP members.

Phan was nominated by his colleagues for his continuous focus on the betterment of systems and data access and reliability. Having received feedback from AMP Members indicating the Member Data Dashboard was cumbersome and inefficient, Phan utilized AMP’s PI Vision tool to create a new dashboard display to allow members to simultaneously review data for all of their sites, while also providing data trends for each data point. Phan’s initiative and innovation resulted in a Member Data Dashboard system that is more efficient for AMP’s SCADA team to support, much more user-friendly, and provides more functionality and insight to members.

Phan joined AMP in 2005 as an energy billing analyst. Phan moved to the IT Department in 2013 as a reporting systems/business analyst. He was promoted to a SCADA analyst in 2015 and to his current position in 2020. He holds a bachelor’s degree in information systems and international business from the University of Cincinnati.

Nominations for the award are submitted by staff in recognition of their colleagues and include a description of the nominee’s innovative thinking and how it makes a difference to AMP and/or its members. The colleagues who nominate their coworkers then make presentations to the executive team about why their nominee should be recognized. The winner is selected based on three main criteria: how their solution or program connects to AMP’s mission, vision and values; originality and uniqueness; and results, significance or relevance.
