COLUMBUS, OH: American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) and several member utilities were recognized for excellence in safety during the American Public Power Association's (APPA) 2021 Engineering & Operations Technical Conference held virtually, March 23-24.

"Utilities that receive an APPA Safety Award have demonstrated that they have made the health and safety of their employees a core value,” said Jolene Thompson, AMP President/CEO and APPA Chair of the Board. “Congratulations to our member communities and to AMP's staff for this recognition. These utilities and their communities should be very proud."

Recognizing utilities for their safety practices (demonstrated by having the lowest safety incident rate within groups), determined by worker-hours of exposure, the following AMP members received awards:

  • Coldwater Board of Public Utilities
  • Dover Light & Power
  • Jackson Center Electric
  • Lewes Board of Public Works (DEMEC)
  • Minster Electric Department
  • New Martinsville Municipal Electric
  • Paducah Power System
  • Perkasie Borough Electric Department
  • St. Clairsville Light and Power Department
  • Shelby Division of Electricity & Communication
  • Village of Versailles Utilities
  • City of Wadsworth Electric and Communications

AMP’s Safety Award of Excellence recognizes the hydroelectric operations staff, AMP Fremont Energy Center staff, generation operations staff and other field staff.

“Safety is a priority at AMP, and we commend the efforts of our members and wish congratulations to all those awarded.” said Michelle Palmer, AMP vice president of technical services and compliance.

According to APPA, 129 utilities have earned the APPA Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2020. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker-hours and ranked based on the most incident-free records during 2020. The incidence rate, used to judge entries, is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2020, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
