Columbus – The Benham Power Board of Benham, Kentucky, has joined American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) as the organization’s 132nd member and the organization’s fourth member community from the Commonwealth.

The utility’s application to join AMP was approved by the AMP Board of Trustees at its February meeting following extensive financial review and based on established criteria for the acceptance of new members.

“We look forward to working with Benham and being a partner in their efforts to provide reliable, cost-effective power supply to their residents and businesses,” AMP President/CEO Marc Gerken said. “These attributes are the hallmark of locally owned public power systems and AMP is proud of our partnership with municipal utilities in nine states.”

Danny Quillen, Benham Power Board Chairman, stated, “We selected AMP based on the economics of their overall power offering. Substantial savings are expected compared to our current supplier.”

Located in Harlan County (southeastern Kentucky), Benham has a population of approximately 500. The electric system was established in 1961 and serves 272 total meters with a 2013 peak of 2,114 kW.

AMP is a leader in wholesale energy supply and value-added member services for publicly owned electric utilities. The organization was formed in 1971 with 26 members, all from Ohio, and has grown substantially both in membership and in services offered.
